Being that it’s winter and all and we’re stuck in the house much more, now is the perfect time to pamper your hair and go all out at home hair spa style. Winter can be brutal on natural hair and oftentimes you don’t even see the damage until the spring and summer arrive–it’s like a wintertime stealth attack. The dry air can be sneaky and strip moisture out of your hair but you can combat that with a deep conditioning mask one or two times a week. And since we all deserves a splurge every now and again, here are a few of the best winter hair masks to splurge on that work amazingly well to soften and moisturize naturally curly hair of all curl types.
Ouai Treatment Masque
This mask is perfect for all hair textures. No matter if your is fine or coarse, you’ll love the moisture that this mask gives your hair. It’s made with artichoke leaf extract (seals your hair cuticle), tamarind seed extract (hyaluronic acid which promotes moisture), keratin protein (for strength and damage repair). It’s also formulated without parabens and phthalates.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask*
We love the ingredients in this mask including avocado, sweet almond and argan oil, keratin protein, rosehip oil, aloe, vitamins B5, D, A, E and biotin, collagen, and silk. It’s a powerhouse for repairing hair that has seen better days and is at the top of our must have list. It’s a really “clean” conditioner and is formulated with 95 percent naturally-derived ingredients as well.
Phyto Phytospecific Ultra-Smoothing Mask
Phyto always delivers and this deep conditioner is no exception. It’s smoothes your hair and is a very hard working deep conditioning mask formulated for relaxed hair (but we like it on natural hair too especially if you have fine hair prone to breakage or really dry hair or color treated hair). Some of the stand out ingredients are ,sea lavender, narcissus wax and camellia oil.
Bumble and Bumble Creme de Coco Masque
This is weekly masque made with a blend of coconut and murumuru butters. murumuru butter is very moisturizing and helps to seal in moisture in your hair (it’s also a great ingredient in skin care products as well). This mask helps to restore moisture, improve flexibility and minimize frizz. We also love the smell which is a bonus but definitely does not outweigh the benefit of how well this mask works on dry, thirsty hair.
Rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask*
Rahua is one of our top two favorite splurge brand. Simply because their products and eco-friendly approach is the real deal. The Omega 9 Hair Mask is formulated with ungurahua oil. It’s an oil chock full of omega-9, which are molecules tiny enough to penetrate your hair strands and go to work fortifying your hair and infusing it with moisture. Extra strength comes from the quinoa protein and lavender and eucalyptus add a spa like feel to this mask as well as some aromatherapy. Often referred to as “hair insurance,” this mask is amazing.
Philip B. Katira Hair Masque
Philip B. is a beautiful line of products that you need to experience at least once and you can’t go wrong starting with their hair mask. Don’t let the clear gel-like formula fool you. It goes to work to add body and volume to fine hair (which is what we like this mask most for–fine haired folks) and also works well on smoothing coarse hair. It rinses clean for those who find that masks always leave a residue on their hair. This is one of those products that sneak up on you and one day you realize your hair is turning into the beautiful head of hair you always knew it would. In the bottle it does not look like much, but trust us, it really does work.
Aveda Blue Malva Color Conditioner
Really great for hair that has been color-treated or bleached, this mask neutralizes brassy tones in all shades of hair. This is one of the creme de la cremes of conditioning masks for color treated hair because even platinum blondes to rich reds can benefit from the blue malva and coneflower which both work to add much need moisture and brightness to hair. It also add highlights gray hair in the most beautiful and subtle way.
Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment*
This mask is formulated with Living Proof’s moisture-controlling molecule, PolyfluoroEster. It’s their own proprietary molecule that according to the brand “restores the protective layer on dry or damaged hair and reduce hair’s porosity by 100%.” We are here to say that this actually works. Like really works. on very porous hair. This mask’s claim to fame is making beat up or dry, brittle hair act like virgin hair again while increasing your hair’s resistance to breakage. For sure our hair felt stronger after continued testing and this is a go-to for us. The mask is also silicone free, oil-free and safe for color and chemically treated hair.
Nexxus New York Salon Care Humectress Moisturizing Deep Conditioning Treatment Mask
Use this a 2 to 3 times a week to add strength to your hair. Great for color treated strands as well as hair that undergoes a lot of heat styling or chemical processes like relaxers, keratin treatments and perms. This mask is all about moisture, moisture, moisture and if your hair is in dire need of it, it’s a good pick (readily available at the drugstore) for an intensive deep treatment.
Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Dream Come True Wonderful Deep Conditioning Masque
With standout ingredients like shea butter, willow, B5 and coconut oil, this mask works quickly to give your hair what it needs without a lot of muss and fuss of other extra, wasteful ingredients.
