There are more than a few drugstore primers that work exceptionally well. Depending on your skin care needs–mature skin to dry or acne prone, there is something for everyone. We’re fan girls of Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer and have even found a new favorite in Boots No7 Colour Calming Primer for skin that tends to flush throughout the day. Like foundation, it’s best to buy primer based on your skin care needs. The tricky part is finding the best ones. In our humble opinion, we’ve vetted out some of the best drugstore face primers out there.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR DRY SKIN AND NORMAL SKIN
ELF Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer comes in a variety of formulations for redness and discoloration. Tone Adjusting Green is ideal for minimizing redness and correcting blotchy skin. Brightening Lavender is ideal for uneven skin tones and to brighten dull or yellow tones. Radiant Glow (contains shimmer) is ideal for creating a luminizing effect on dark spots and uneven skin tones. We liked this best for dry and normal skin as it didn’t hold up well on oily skin during the day.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR OILY SKIN
Boots No7 Beautifully Matte Make Up Base is one of the best drugstore primer for oily skin as well as oily mature skin as is Rimmel Stay Matte Primer which can control oil for up to 8 hours and goes on very light. These three can sometimes be tricky to find because the secret is out about how great they are so when you do see them, grab a few tubes. Neutrogena Shine Control Primer, NYX Cosmetics Shine Killer and Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Translucent (which is at Ulta) are also really good at keeping shine at bay.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN
You don’t necessarily have to use a primer with salicylic acid if your face wash and moisturizer already have it. However, if you feel like you need an extra layer of treatment for acne, Olay Fresh Effects Clear Skin Mattifier works really well. It’s oil-free and non-comedogenic and formulated with Vitamin B3, B15, chamomile, citrus and mint to keep skin calm. Physicians Formula Talc Free Mineral Correcting Concealer really works wonders on skin with dark spots and especially if you have dark circles (which is what we like this best for).
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR MATURE SKIN
L’Oréal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base is popular with makeup artists for a reason. It helps to not only even out your skin tone and texture but it also fills in lines without settling into your lines. Boots No7 Photo Fix Wrinkle Filler and Primer, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Primer and Cover Girl Simple Ageless Serum Primer (which is formulated with Olay Regenerist Cream Moisturizer to plump skin and blur fine lines and wrinkles) are also great choices.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR REDNESS AND DISCOLORATION
Boots No7 Colour Calming Primer is the business. It’s a green tinted primer that counteracts redness and discoloration in your skin. It also contains horse chestnut extract to care for your skin and keep it calm. L’Oreal Studio Secrets Color Correcting Anti-Redness Primer is also a green primer that reduces redness and discoloration like dark circles.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR LARGE PORES AND SKIN IMPERFECTIONS
Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer will give you one of the smoothest faces you’ll ever expeerience with a drugstore primer. We loved this on skin with large pores and imperfections for the flawless base it created. L’Oréal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base, NYX Pore Filler and Rimmel Fix And Perfect Primer are also really great and hiding pores and other skin imperfections.
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR DULL SKIN
THE BEST DRUGSTORE PRIMER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Palladio Herbal Foundation Primer works really great on sensitive skin. (We’ve yet to track down a silicone free drugstore primer but will let you know when we do).
THE BEST DRUGSTORE FACE PRIMER FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer and Rimmel Lasting Finish Primer our all-around favorites for all skin types. Both apply smoothly and even out skin, calms redness and the PhotoReady even brightens your face and diffuses light to minimize flaws in your skin. Both deliver everything you want a good primer to.
