Solana Rowe, currently known to the world by her stage name SZA, is a St. Louis-born, New Jersey-raised R&B singer that has been on our radar since last year. Her records See.SZA.Run and S were how we started our girl crush on this new artist. Since then, we’ve been laying in wait for more music and since she’s been snatched up by Top Dawg Entertainment, home to Kendrick Lamar, we expect that this big, natural-haired, freckled-face maven will soon be dropping some unexpected sounds.
SZA has taken on the task of R&B. We like to think of it as a task because all too often artists think of this genre as an “in-the-bag” sound and become comfortable sounding like someone else who really never sounded good in the first place. But SZA is no second rate spin off and we realized that when we hear tracks like “Ice Moon”, “Julia” and “Teen Spirit” which are heavy on the instrumentals, bass, and a throwback to that dance-heavy, 80s sound we love (Julia). Those sweet melodies stick with you long after her record has finished spinning. We dare you to not hit repeat.
