In the creative world of makeup, people tend to stay inside a box. Many find that it’s “safter” there. One thing I realized is that makeup has no rules. With this red smokey eyeshadow and pink lipstick look we just went for it and donned Priscilla’s eyes in red and finished her lips off with a pastel, opaque pink lip. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, this would be a great look for a night out on the town.

Priscilla has beautiful eyes and I wanted to play on her full lids as well as her lips and so I used an array of products to put this look together including red lipstick for her eyeshadow. On her lips I used a beautiful opaque pink lipstick for a few reasons. The first is that the contrast it gives to the red smokey eye has more impact than a light, translucent pink would and secondly, because the colors complement each other, it gives this look an edge and drama that a softer pink lip can’t quite pull off. It’s a very modern day Jean Seberg meets Dorothy Dandridge. For the everyday woman, this look can be fun and exciting to do for any occasion (we’re talking “? bout de Souffle” style or just Saturday brunch).

A NOTE ON RED EYESHADOW AND DIFFERENT SKIN TONES
If you have very light skin (think Gwenneth to Mariah) and also have red or pink undertones, you’ll want to avoid reds with pink bases like the red Priscilla is wearing above. On your face, a red like this will make your face look even redder and continually flushed all day, but not in a good way. It can also may your eyes look tired. Instead, go for dark copper to brown-based reds. If you are in the middle, say anywhere from Beyonce to Priscilla, see our suggestions below. If you have darker brown skin (think Mindy Kaling to Viola Davis) you can test out as many vibrant reds as you want to see which works best. The darker you are, the more vibrant you can go and in most cases most hues of red will look amazing against your skin.
