Imagine you’re in Barbados partying alongside Rihanna for Carnival. You’re decked out in all the festival regalia. You’ve got your jeweled bustier and your elaborate headdress. Your makeup is apropos and elegantly on fleek. Now take away all the fanfare and the feathers. The music and the dancing. What’s left? That amazing face.
Carnival is a celebration in vivid colors and while the idea of Carnival may be on your bucket list, you don’t have to let that day dream go to waste while you wait for the opportune time to jet off to Barbados or Brazil. You can bring the carnival to you. The celebration is in the details. While we love a bold orange hue (especially on the lips), why not play it up on the eyes? You could go the orange eyeliner route to play it safe, or embrace your inner Carnival bad gal and swipe a vibrant orange shadow all over your lid like Jana’s look. While you’re at it, add an accent color on your lashes to make your eyes and the orange shadow pop. We like to think outside the box and give you beauty that’s unexpected. Think of this as a festival on your eyes only. If you are not a Carnival loving girl, think of this as pre- and fall look.
Certain colors look amazing on a canvas of brown skin. Rich hues the color of a late summer sunset pair well with melanin rich skin. When we wear these tones we look so regal that it’s obvious we come from a long line of royalty hence the feathered Carnival crowns. To get this look, forget your traditional mascara. Lindsey paired an electric blue mascara on Jana’s lashes to grace her deep orange lids. Although these are complimentary colors, rarely do you see them used in such an electrifying way. #MakeupForBlackWomen #MakeupForWomenOfColor #BeautyInOurReflection
ON JANA:
Napoleon Perdis ‘Color Disc’ Tequila Sunrise Eyeshadow #56
NYX Blush in Cinnamon
Hard Candy Mascara in Electric Blue
Black Opal True Color Liquid Foundation
Milani Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss in Bare Secret
HOW TO GET THIS LOOK:
To achieve Jana’s orange eye, prep your lids with an eyeshadow primer like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. With an angled brush, use small strokes to apply orange shadow from inner corners to the outer corners of your eye including the bottom lash line. The shape will look similar to a cat eye. Next, apply orange shadow on the lid and blend outward toward your brown bone. Dab a hint of gold-hued eyeshadow just below the brows and on the inside corners of your eyes to really make that orange pop. Blend well. Now, use a purple or even blue mascara for your lashes. Finish off the look with a neutral lip gloss.
