“My hair is both kinky and extremely curly. It most definitely has a mind and personality of its own. I learned a long time ago that its wiser to let it do its own thing as opposed to trying to control it. As far as products, I’m not necessarily married to any products in particular. The only thing I seem to be attached to is olive oil. Shea butter and aloe vera gel are up there too. I like that they are naturally edifying for the entire body. Other products I am fond of are Ojon and Alter EGO Impact Ego Hot Oil Treatment with Garlic. When my hair is curly, I tend to let it just be free and the only accessories I use on a regular basis are thin headbands. When pressed I either wear it out or play with interesting plats. I used to be a bit of both a diy-er or a salon girl, but in recent years I’ve veered off of salons and have been doing it myself. The only other person who touches my hair is my baby sister…who happens to be a hair stylist.

When I straighten my natural hair, I stick with olive oil, Ojon and TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray. After applying these products, I blow dry, then follow with my handy dandy CHI straightener. I sometimes run through with a curling iron as well…when I’m not already completely worn out by the entire process.

ON MAKEUP AND SKIN CARE
I’m very straight-forward and no-fuss concerning my skin care and beauty routines. I have combination skin, so my only real concern is staying balanced, and that is affected by both eating and cleansing habits. My favorite skincare brand is Origins. Their rice based exfoliator ‘Modern Friction’ is quite amazing. Oil of Olay and Aveeno have great qualities as well. Biotin is a gift from God. Its a vitamin that isn’t naturally produced by the body, but helps promote healthy skin, hair and nails. Results are relatively rapid. It can typically be found at your local drug store or vitamin shop.

I am a bigger fan of good skin, than make-up. Aveeno has a great brightening moisturizer called ‘Positively Radiant‘ that gives skin a nice fresh look. My go-to make up brand is Bare Minerals but I also bounce between that and Mineralize by MAC. Bare Minerals, Neosporin, blush and a million tubes of lipgloss is sure to be found in my purse at any given moment.

ON FASHION
My fashion sense is easy and comfortable, yet structural. My grandmother is my style icon. She was quite the stylish lady on all accounts of those who knew her. She even had a knack for design and construction and created some rather fashion-forward pieces for a girl in Belize without any commercial influence or access to mass media. I happen to be her namesake. She was fabulous.

The pieces in my closet that describe me the most are my Levi’s – I have acquired quite the collection, motorcycle jackets; I have a rather extensive collection of these as well, trench coats, dresses, dresses, and dresses. they make life so easy, a great pair statement shoes and I must add gaudy jewelry. I can’t help it. All of the those pieces describe me pretty well, particularly the jackets. I’m a sucker for a great jacket. It makes everything else so easy. I am also a huge fan of Levi’s. Out of 50+ pairs of jeans, only about 5 aren’t by the originators.

My style stays consistent. I would say that the only way it changes is that it becomes more refined as I do. I honestly don’t take myself or my style seriously enough to have an ultimate goal for it. If anything, I wish the era when everyone was a bit more elegant would make a comeback.” – Jessie
