Summer care hair routines can become complacent and mundane just like any other of the gazillion things we have going on in our lives. Though I like to keep up on doing what I need to do to keep my hair in the best shape possible, my summer schedule can sometimes get in the way which is why putting coconut oil in heavy rotation becomes a life saver.

In the summer, I get deep conditioning amnesia. Though a seemingly easy task, it gets pushed to the back burner for some other pressing “to-do” on my constantly full plate. I’m lucky if I can get a good session in once a month. Couple that with my constant sun exposure and it’s a must that I make smart choices when it comes to protecting my hair. During the summer our hair takes a beating. with all the manipulation our hair sees during a wash session and daily handling, drying uv rays and pool and beach water, we can help keep it all together by working magic with coconut oil.

But who seriously wants to always wait for coconut oil to work overnight? I don’t. Nope, not every time. A successful pre-poo treatment should be versatile and quick when needed and though you could slather on honey, eggs or mayonnaise as treatments (the likes of which I use from time to time), using coconut oil which has been proven to penetrate the hair strand makes this summer treatment magical because instead of just sitting on top of the hair and leaving behind a coating, coconut oil can treat your hair from within. To keep you hair shining bright like a diamond this season, here are a few tips on using a coconut oil sunscreen pre-poo treatment on your hair during the summer.

HOW TO DO A COCONUT OIL SUNSCREEN PRE-POO TREATMENT BEFORE SWIMMING
This tip I love so much because it’s made a world of difference in my hair after swimming. Before getting into the pool or ocean, I saturate my hair with water and then slather on Monoi Tiki Tahiti Coconut Oil (the fragrant jasmine essence is so beautiful) or my Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner and let it sit at least 30 minutes before i hit the water. Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner seriously melts into your hair – think magic coconut potion (this stuff is the ish!) – so there is no conditioner “residue” at all. I usually do this at home because by the time I get to the pool or beach my hair is protected and ready to go. The coconut oil absorbs easily and provides uv protection for my hair as well. The great thing about this oil is that because it absorbs easily I’m not swimming with “greasy hair” but after swimming my hair is soft and easier to detangle. After I get out of the water and I’m just lounging around, I’ll rinse my hair with a bottle of spring water to remove any sand or chlorine and then I’ll whip out a spray bottle filled with half Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner and half water and mist my hair. This helps so much to keep your hair detangled, protected in the sun and prepped for a good wash once you get home.

HOW TO DO A COCONUT OIL POST-SWIMMING PRE-POO TREATMENT
Starting with dry, detangled hair, section your hair into 4 to 6 sections with hair clips. If you hair is not detangled, separate your hair and use the oil to “wet” one section at a time and then proceed to finger detangle or use a plastic-tipped wide tooth comb. After detangling and using a generous amount, coat your hair in oil or your pre-shampoo treatment of choice. I love Lush’s Jasmine and Henna Fluff-Eaze pre-shampoo treatment because it’s packed with copious amounts of moisturizing and nutrient-filled oils including organic jojoba, almond, brazil nut and extra virgin coconut oil.

Once each section has been coated you have two choices, you can either go to bed to let your oil go to work or wash the oil out of your hair after 30 minutes to an hour. If you choose the bedtime routine, cover your hair with a plastic cap and then wrap that in a head scarf or lay a towel over your pillows to avoid stains. The key to a fully successful pre-poo with coconut oil is keep it in for at least 6 hours (which most people do overnight) so you can be sure to benefit from a deep treatment from the oil. But by doing a treatment before and after a swim you can get close to the same protection level. Hair can absorb around 15% of its weight in coconut oil in an hour. Six hours or more, increases absorption to around 20% or 25%.

Pre-conditioning your hair with coconut oil before and after swimming encourages strength and moisture retention which can lead to longer, more vibrant hair. Summer schedules can get hectic but by finding creative ways to treat your hair means we can all enjoy the sun without regret.
