There is an art to a really smooth butt. Granted some people have nary a stretch mark and have never in their life experienced a bimple (butt pimple). These people are also unicorns. For the rest of the world, we have to schedule in butt exfoliation as part of our body maintenance plan. Many women, including your girl Beyonce, love a handprint and good grip back there. And while the gripping is being done, we want to avoid said gripper walking away with calluses because…sandpaper butt. There are a few things on a woman that most of us want to keep soft–our face, our feet and our asses. I personally take great pride my baby butt. It’s something that we figured out how to maintain long ago (as detailed here). The art of a smooth butt is kind of like a right of passage that once you master becomes a part of you.

The key to getting a smooth butt is starts in the shower with your exfoliator in both your soap and body scrub. You want something that’s not too harsh or too gentle. The skin on your butt can take a lot but you don’t want to over exfoliate because then your skin (remember it’s your largest organ) will respond with more melanin from the damage which will lead to dark spots or you’ll actually scrap off skin if you are scrubbing too hard which will lead to butt sores which still leads to more melanin to repair. No bueno. Medium pressure three times a week is all you need.

IF YOU HAVE BUTT ACNE AND OR DARK SPOTS
If you have dark spots on your butt, you want to treat your butt like you would your face but that can get expensive fast. The cost effective way is to wtart with an effective enzyme soap and a loofa or pair of exfoliating gloves. My favorite soap for the task is Likas Original Papaya Whitening Soap. I loathe the name but it works and you don’t actually have to worry about your skin turning into an entirely different race. Instead, it helps to even out your skin tone (check out our review of to this soap). If you use this soap you won’t need to follow with a scrub as it provides really good exfoliation. You want to treat your acne and dark spots gently. It will take some time but stick with it and you should see improvements.

If you are more of scrub girl, try Peter Thomas Roth Blemish Buffing Beads For Face and Body which has salicylic acid, glycolic acid complex, and sepicontrol which is great for anyone who sweats daily as it helps to control oil. Alba Acnedote Face & Body Scrub with salicylic acid is formulated with ground walnut shells and is a good choice for those with more sensitive but still acne prone skin. Neutrogena Body Clear Body Scrub is an oldie but goodie for all skin types as is St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Body Intensive Exfoliating Treatment with papaya and pumpkin enzymes digest dead skin cells and buffs them away with a gentle mix of glycolic and lactic acids.

IF YOU HAVE DRY OR NORMAL SKIN
Go with an natural oil-based salt or sugar body scrub like argan coconut, jojoba or olive like Josie Maran Argan Sugar Balm Body Scrub, Boots Botanics Indulgent Bathing Smoothing Body Scrub or Shea Moisture Community Commerce Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hand & Body Scrub.

IF YOU HAVE STRETCH MARKS
Coffee based scrubs are your friend as caffeine help to tighten and firm skin. If you are also treating your skin for dark spots, you can alternate between the two. Pacifica Kona Coffee & Sugar Detox Natural Body Scrub and Tree Hut Firming Sugar Scrub Italian Mocha are two of our favorites.

IF YOU HAVE KP OR ECZEMA
You can’t go wrong with Derma Doctor KP Duty Body Scrub which combines the benefits of a chemical peel and a microdermabrasion or Glytone Exfoliating Body Wash. Expect a difference in your butt in about a week with either of these two.

IF YOU WANT TO GO CHEMICAL FREE
Try a body brush, loofa or nylon body cloth and your body wash. The exfoliation you get from either body tool is different so you’ll need to play around to see which you like best.
