Your undertone is the most important thing when it comes to finding the right foundation shade. The overall foundation color is important too, yes, but if the base colors are off (red, yellow, blue), even if it looks like it should match, it won’t. That’s because if your foundation does not match your skin’s undertone, the color will show up on your skin as ashy white, orange or pink.
HOW TO FIND YOUR SKIN TONE AND UNDERTONE
Your skin’s undertone–the color cast beneath your skin–is either warm, cool or neutral with the two primary undertones for most of the world being warm and cool. Most of the planet is made up of people of color who more often than not have warm, brown skin that comes in a variety of shades with warm undertones. You can think of warm undertones representing warmth-the sun and sand. Cool undertones are more representative of a cool day-the sky and blue ocean.
Skin tones are not the same thing as undertones. Your skin tone is your skin’s color on top and your undertone is the color cast underneath your skin. No matter how often your skin tone changes because of the seasons, your undertone never changes. Your skin tone can also change because of sun exposure, hyperpigmentation, acne or just aging but your undertone will remain the same.
HOW TO FIND YOUR UNDERTONE FOR FOUNDATION
The fastest way to find your undertone for foundation is to think about which colors look best on you. If you look really good in nude and soft pinks, tans, and corals you are probably warm. If you look good in blues and whites then you are probably cool. Another way is to check out your veins if they are visible. If they are blue then your undertones are cool. If they are more green then you have warm undertones. If they look blue-green then you have neutral undertones. You can also test your undertones by comparing silver and gold jewelry. Look best in gold? Then you have warm undertones. Silver stands out on your skin and makes you glow? Then you are probably, cool. Just because you are a certain race does not mean you’ll have a specific undertone. Many darker skinned people like dark skinned Black people and Indians for example can have a blue cast to their skin which means they have cool undertones.
