If you’ve been keeping up with us for the last couple of weeks, you may have thought we’d be winding down our Curls In Color series with one last article and then we’d be out by now. Actually, we’re just getting started. Now comes the best part–the transformations. Transformations that we hope will encourage and inspire you to step outside the box and color your natural hair. A diverse group of women, all with different natural hair textures, were up for the challenge and decided to allow us to give them natural hair makeovers. In collaboration with our editorial hairstylist Amena BelledeSoleil, and owner of Hair Polish Natural Hair Studio in Los Angeles, we picked the final hair colors based on what we felt would fit each woman’s personality and lifestyle best. Equipped with tubes of rich and beautiful Pravana hair color, beautiful and healthy heads of colored natural hair were made. In no particular order, this is our first Curls In Color story.

DJ Kita definitely surprised us. A little reserved and quiet, once we were able to get her to warm up to us over conversations about cute purses (she came to the shoot with a very lovely black vintage style purse) we were in for a surprise. She had lots to say as we hung out at Hair Polish all day playing in color and transforming her hair–all of which was a surprise until she saw the color being mixed. DJ Kita is a military woman and though she’s still a little shy, she’s drawn to the one’s and two’s and likes to spin music mixes that make you want to drop it like it’s hot.

We knew after meeting her that her hair called from something fire. At the time that didn’t necessarily mean fire red, but fire–hot, bringing that thunda. On the outside she was like Anna Mae but inside she was all Tina and we wanted her hair to reflect that. “I’m down for whatever,” was her saying that day and when she finally saw that beautiful red being mixed in her color bowl, her face lit up. “I’ve always wanted to try really red hair! I’m so excited!” Bingo, we’d hit the jackpot.

As you can see, her red natural hair looks amazing. It also felt soft and healthy and not dried out. Amena colored her hair using Pravana hair color. We like Pravana as a brand because of how gentle it performs on virgin and colored natural hair. Even after lifting, your curls stay true to size and texture and the color deposits evenly with a beautiful pigment payoff. Kita’s red is true to color and amazingly vibrant and her splash of electric orange color block sets her natural hair off in a very eclectic way that she really appreciated because in the end, she felt that her hair reflected her personality. She loved it so much, she’s even been back to Hair Polish since we shot this to get her hair cut again (shorter hair don’t care) and to start planning out how to transition her to her next vibrant color.
