There are a plethora of home color brands to choose from but only a handful that we think are the best of the best. There are plenty that fully cover greys and deliver really good color payoff that didn’t make our top four list. To curate our list, we set these parameters: the hair color brand has to be formulated to be gentle to reduce damage, when available it should also contain plant-based oils, it should work well on naturally curl hair, the color pay off should be good, the cost reasonable for the results and the results consistent. Here are the best home hair color brands we found work the best on all hair types while still leaving the hair soft and supple.

Shea Moisture Nourishing, Moisture-Rich Hair Color System
We like this brand because it contains fortifying oils and butter and the color pigments are tonally balanced. It contains organic shea butter, soy protein, flaxseed oil and organic glycerin. These box colors are formulated in a way that no major damage can happen to your hair if used as directed since they only output one to two levels of lift (what is safely recommended by stylists for at home color) so they are safe to use at home.

Garnier Oilia Oil Powered Permanent Color
We also really like the oils in this brand as well. It has no ammonia as well as a 60% oil blend formula that provide vivid, long-lasting color and 100% gray coverage. We like the the variety of the hair colors they offer and that they have more permanent options. Oilia really is one of the best home hair dye brands you can buy.

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Creme Permanent Color
This line has a brighter and wider range of shades than Oilia. It has a little less oil than Olia and contains ammonia but is still a gentle enough at-home hair color brand. It comes in both foam and creme formulations. Nutrisse delivers some of the best home red hair color you can get out of a box.

Clarol Textures And Tones
This home color line is where you’re going to get the highest lift for dark hair with still some pretty good tones. This line tends to not go brassy when you want to go blonde which is something that you want to avoid when lightening your hair.

John Frida Precision Foam Colour
The application of the foam is easy to use and you can actually reuse this line. Unlike traditional creams, once you mix foam color, it can be reused since it’s like a mousse. The shades in this line are pretty translucent but they are still very pretty. If you want the most natural looking color you’d want to use this line versus color that is more opaque like Textures and Tones. We like this best for type 2 hair as this line delivers best on hair that is not very tightly curled or kinky.
