Alicia Key’s skin looks ah-mazing. Luckily for us, she’s been very open about her journey to getting her skin clear and acne free. Having struggled with acne for a long time, she’s no stranger to the struggle for clear skin. The good thing about her skin care routine is that it’s accessible and mostly affordable. In addition to being big into exercise and healthy eating (she’s completely eliminated dairy), which plays a huge part in the condition of her skin, she uses a jade roller and jojoba oil on her skin and also touts acupuncture as helpful.
In a a personal essay for Lenny Letter, the singer and activist detailed how an impromtu shoot she did with photographer extrodinaire, Paola Kudacki, fresh from leaving the gym inspired her to start her #nomakeup campaign. “I’d just come from the gym, had a scarf under my baseball cap, and the beautiful photographer Paola (never met a Paola I didn’t like) said, ‘I have to shoot you right now, like this! The music is raw and real, and these photos have to be too!'”
HOW ALICIA KEYS GOT HER FLAWLESS SKIN
She uses a Jade Roller to calm irritation
According to her esthetician, Dotti Streeters, she uses a jade roller on Alicia’s face which gives her face a lymphatic massage to helps drain away toxins and reduce eye bags and puffiness, while also stimulating collagen production. Her esthetician also grates an entire cucumber and applies it all over her face apart from to attract blood to the surface. (We can just see it now: an episode of ‘Insecure’ with our cucumber face…getting out Alicia and our Issa on.)
She uses face masks and pure jojoba oil
Because jojoba oil is the closest thing to natural skin sebum it’s a great oil for every skin type including those with sensitive skin. It’s a great all over body oil as well as facial moisturizer. You can almost not go wrong with this oil unless you find yourself truly allergic to it (which is rare, btw).
Very light coverage makeup is her go-to when she’s filming
For her television appearances, Alicia sometimes fills in her brows and applies Vita Liberata Self Tanning Anti-Age Serum, instead of foundation. She sometimes enhances her freckles with Anastasia’s Universal Light and Universal Dark Felt Pens. Her lips are finished with balms from 3Lab or Lanolips. Interestingly enough, her brows are not filled in but enhanced with individual false eyelashes so that when the lights hit her face, they don’t look fake.
She’s big into acupuncture and healthy eating
Acupuncture plus exercise and healthy eating help to round out Alicia’s skin care. She’s not raw or vegan or on any specific diet, she simply makes healthy balances choices with her food.
She doesn’t think there is anything wrong with wearing makeup…The bigger message of #nomakeup is to do what makes you happy
“Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against women wearing makeup—it’s a personal decision. But I feel more comfortable without makeup. And I’m happy to say I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from young women for making my decision. I believe that you have to feel good about yourself if you want to be successful in life. […] I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing. — as told to The Red Bulletin and Lenny Letter
